Soccer scarves are a cherished, colorful, and iconic keepsake for fans of the sport. Over time they’ve been evolving into the globally recognized symbol of a sports fan. But scarves are not just for soccer anymore! Custom sports scarves are also a high-quality and beautiful way of showing pride in any sports team.
Scarves are a big deal in soccer because nearly 100 years ago, they were the first symbol of fandom seen across pitches in England. In the 10 decades since, sports scarves have continued to grow in popularity and expand to other fandoms.
Capture moments and create memories with custom football scarves, hockey scarves, beanies, and more!
The History of Custom Sports Scarves
For early soccer scarves, custom accessories were the only option. Grandmothers of English football fans would knit scarves in their favorite team’s colors to stand out in stadiums. Against the drab colors of early 1900s British fashion, “granny scarves” made a huge statement.
The scarves of those times didn’t have much in common with today’s premium custom sports scarves. 100 years ago, the patterns were primarily simple stripes. In the 1960s and 1970s, mass manufacturing finally took hold, and soccer scarves became much more elaborate.
In the 1980s, the soccer scarf trend took hold in Europe. Finally, after the 1994 World Cup, soccer scarves came to North America, as well.
Ruffneck has been making the ultimate soccer scarves since 2007. Within the last 5 years, sports fans and officials have begun to desire their own custom sport scarves. This is why we’ve branched out and expanded our team collaborations. These now include the MLS, NHL, US Soccer, USL, and USWNT Players Association.
As soccer enthusiasts ourselves, we love that fans of all games are investing in this iconic accessory. We are eager to see what the future holds for custom sports scarves!
Modern Custom Scarves for Soccer and More
Again, today’s custom-made scarves are significantly more impressive than early soccer scarves. Although their look has changed, the feelings of pride a custom scarf inspires have not shifted.
Today as ever, people wear scarves to soccer games, but collectors often display their sports scarves at home. As their designs have gotten more intricate and custom options have expanded, many fans have become sports scarf collectors.
If you plan to accessorize with your scarf, here are a few ideas for styling a sports scarf:
- Drape it over your shoulders. This is ideal for soccer matches so that you can raise your scarf in the air along with your fellow fans!
- Flip one end over your shoulder, creating a loop around your neck. For fans in colder climates, this style will also keep you cozy.
- Knot the scarf by folding it in half and wrapping it around your neck. Slip the loose ends through the loop and tighten.
